About the Rev. Daniel Dean Coffey

Rev. Daniel Dean Coffey is an ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament, chaplain, Christian educator, writer, public speaker, and public theologian rooted in the mountains of North Carolina. His ministry brings together pastoral care, preaching, spiritual formation, inclusive Christian community, and a deep commitment to justice.

Rev. Daniel Coffey serves within the International Council of Community Churches, an international, intercultural, and interracial fellowship of churches and ministry centers. The ICCC is committed to Christian unity, reconciliation, justice, community, diversity, service, and love. Its present form was created in 1950 through the merger of two Community Church traditions: the Biennial Council of the Peoples Church of Christ and Community Centers, led by Dr. Joseph M. Evans, and the National Council of Community Churches, led by the Rev. Roy A. Burkhardt. This union is remembered as one of the first major interracial religious integrations of its kind and, at the time, the largest interracial merger of religious bodies in America before the height of the modern Civil Rights Movement.

This history gives the ICCC a distinctive witness to racial reconciliation, Christian unity, and shared ministry across the lines that have too often divided the Church. As a post-denominational and ecumenically minded communion, the ICCC honors freedom of conscience, congregational self-determination, and Christ’s prayer “that they may all be one.” The ICCC also participates in the wider ecumenical movement through relationships with the National Council of Churches, the World Council of Churches, Christian Churches Together, and Churches Uniting in Christ. Through these ties, Rev. Coffey’s ministry is situated within a broader Christian witness committed to unity, justice, reconciliation, and faithful service to the world.

The Kalendar

The Christian Liturgical Calendar, also known as the Christian Calendar, Church Calendar, Ecclesiastical Calendar, or simply “the Kalendar,” is a framework Christians use to order the seasons, feast days, and rhythms of the church year. It helps the church mark the great celebrations of the Christian faith, including Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, and other holy days. Many churches reflect these seasons visually through the use of paraments, which are decorative cloths placed on the pulpit, lectern, communion table, or altar. These paraments often change color according to the liturgical season. The Calendar may also guide the color of the minister’s stole, the liturgical scarf worn during worship. Even if many Christians have not heard the term “Church Calendar,” they have likely encountered its influence through Advent candles, Christmas Eve services, Ash Wednesday, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and Pentecost.
